The Food and Drug Administration has approved a University of Rochester Medical Center spinoff’s new breast imaging systems, URMC officials said Wednesday.

URMC researcher Ruola Ning invented the breast imaging system and heads Koning Corp., the spinoff company that plans to produce and market the Koning Breast CT system.

The breast imaging device is not meant to supplant equipment currently used for routine mammography screening. The 3D imaging system rather is to be used to identify cancers in women whose routine screens showed abnormalities or have otherwise exhibited signs or symptoms of breast cancer.
