This morning’s headlines suggest we’ve reached an inflection point in our country’s response to the coronavirus pandemic. The characterization that health-driven policy decisions are at odds with economic recovery has hardened into an assumed truth. Faced with the likelihood that a rapid loosening of social distancing requirements will result in an increase in infections, political leaders in some quarters have begun to embrace the notion that COVID-19 deaths are an acceptable cost for economic gain. Beyond the shocking nature of this calculation, this formulation also reveals a lack of trust in science and healthcare advances.
We reject this view and call on all Americans to stand with the scientists, innovators, and healthcare providers working to defeat the coronavirus. The bio/med community has, throughout its history, demonstrated the triumph of science over disease. This has never been more true than it is today. Yes, this pandemic and the response to it has extracted an enormously high toll on the economy and our way of life. Yes, we support responsible and measured efforts to reopen businesses and begin the process of returning to something resembling normal. However, now is not the time to abandon faith in the power of innovation and discovery. We at MedTech remain bullish on America and steadfast in our belief that science will lead us back to better days.
