RPI Key Hub in $140 Million Smart Manufacturing Institute

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy is going to help lead a new $140 million manufacturing institute announced Monday by the Obama administration.
The Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute will be based at UCLA in Los Angeles but have a northeast hub at RPI that will specialize in glass, ceramic and microelectronic manufacturing. RPI will be one of five hubs across the country.
The institute’s mission will be to develop smart sensors and digital process controls to improve the efficiency of advanced manufacturing in the United States. It was funded with $70 million from the Department of Energy, which has been creating clean energy manufacturing institutes aimed at different parts of the manufacturing sector.
