A team of Rochester Institute of Technology students proved they could beat the best in defending against cyber attacks. They took first place for the fifth year in a row at the annual Northeast Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition over the weekend in Syracuse.
The team competes next in San Antonio in the national competition, where RIT has been a perennial contender. It placed second nationally in 2014 and claimed the top spot in 2013.
“I compete in the competition because I enjoy developing the strategies for how to defend against the attackers,” said Bryan Harmat, a fourth-year computing security student and captain of the RIT team.
Industry professionals from companies such as Raytheon Co., CrowdStrike Inc. and Dell Inc. were assigned as part of the competition to break into computer networks to exploit information from a mock company. Teams of students were challenged to prevent that theft.
Teams were scored on their ability to detect and respond to outside threats; respond to business requests, such as the addition or removal of services; and balance security needs with business needs.
