MedTech is a state-wide trade association with a mission to grow New York’s bio/med industry through connections and collaboration. Its members consist of life sciences and healthcare companies, academic research institutions, and organizations that support and invest in the industry. MedTech connects its members for business development and networking, provides education, and advocates on behalf of the industry. It also provides exclusive benefits that include discounts on purchases and supplies, access to member-only programs, and  introductions to potential partners, customers, and investors.

NextCorps recently caught up with MedTech’s Executive Director, Winthrop (Win) Thurlow, to talk about how the association supports entrepreneurs.

What is one thing people would be surprised to learn about how MedTech supports our community?

We’re committed to helping not only our members, but also the larger community. The growth of high-tech jobs in Upstate New York has not benefited all residents equally, and we’re working with our members and with New York State government to address inequities in opportunity and hiring. We’re launching a program to assist our members in achieving measurable success in reaching their diversity, equity, and inclusion goals, while simultaneously connecting communities of need with good paying bio/med jobs.

How does MedTech help entrepreneurs and growing companies in the Greater Rochester Region?

We recognize that startups face unique challenges, and often struggle to make connections with the partners and resources they need to grow and thrive. We focus on understanding the needs of our individual members and work to help them achieve their strategic goals. The Greater Rochester Region is particularly rich in entrepreneurial resources and we work to foster connections close to home. In fact, many entrepreneurs working on solutions for the bio/med industry that belong to NextCorps have a MedTech membership.

At the same time, we know that success may require assistance from outside the region, and we connect our members to the resources they need across the state, the nation, and the globe.

What is one piece of advice that you would give entrepreneurs who are interested in connecting with you?

Don’t be afraid to ask for what you need. We exist for one reason: to help our members. We achieve that goal by highlighting their good work, introducing them to one another, and helping them navigate their challenges. We encourage you to call us; let us know what you need and how we can help you. We’re here for you.
