MEDTECH 2013 Promotes Public and Academic Partnerships

Wednesday, October 2, 2013

On October 7th-8th in Rochester, NY,  MedTech will be hosting its annual conference, MEDTECH 2013, focused on mapping the road to profitable growth for the bioscience and medical technology (bio/med) industry.   Featured at the conference will be Ken Adams, President & CEO and Commissioner of New York State’s Empire State Development.

According to Ken Adams, “New York State is committed to supporting innovative partnerships that connect businesses and academic institutions to promote job and industry growth by taking advantage of all of the resources that New York State has to offer.  The bioscience and medical technology industry provides hundreds of thousands of direct and indirect jobs to New York State residents and at MEDTECH 2013, I will highlight how new initiatives like Start-Up NY will further boost job creation throughout New York State.”

Conference panels include “Opportunities for Growing Bio/Med in NYS” and “Collaborations Between Academic Transfer Tech Offices and Private Industry”.  These panels will teach companies how they can work with New York State and academic institutions to expand, develop innovative technology, and spur job creation in New York.

“MEDTECH 2013’s extensive agenda will help companies develop the relationships, tools, and programs to bring tomorrow’s medical solutions to the healthcare marketplace,” said MedTech President Jessica Crawford. “Our partners at Empire State Development and at colleges and universities throughout New York State are vital and expanding resources in driving profitable, sustainable growth in the bio/med industry.”

Companies have already demonstrated successful growth through partnering with academic institutions, and Start-Up NY, Governor Cuomo’s initiative to transform SUNY campuses and other university communities across the state into tax-free communities for new and expanding businesses, will only increase that success.  A featured company will be the Applied Sciences Group (ASG).  ASG is a private software development company for industrial automation, machine control and real-time embedded system applications that offer custom software solutions. A leader in innovation, ASG was recently listed as number 13 in Buffalo Business First’s 2013 list of technology companies and has collaborated with eight University of Buffalo startup companies since 2005.   Its President of 17 years, Paul Buckley, recently explained ASG’s work with the SUNY Buffalo’s Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences.  The Center of Excellence enables them to diversify and take advantage of a multitude of commercial and industry projects. The support of the Center for Excellence has allowed ASG to develop a highly advanced eye tracking loop to be worn by physically comprised patients to enable them to control anything from texting to wheelchair control.

Paul Buckley recently explained that “One unexpected benefit of this invention is the opportunity to support physically compromised veterans after they return home from war, due to the high incidence of ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), traumatic brain injury, and other injuries suffered while in combat.”

Another biomedical success that ASG helped to develop is the “smart pill.” This pill is a computerized capsule which records data of a patient’s bodily functions to assist a clinician or doctor in their diagnostic process.  This development, the eye loop, and so many others that have resulted from the smart collaboration with the Center of Excellence and the University have led to ASG growth in employees by over 25%.
