Voices from the Middle Kingdom: IP Opportunities and Challenges in China

11/19/08 (TH) 3:30 - 6:00

Carestream Health - 150 Verona Street, Rochester, 14608

In 2008, the Chinese People’s Courts heard more intellectual property (IP) cases than courts in the United States, and China became the most IP litigious country in the world. China’s National IP Strategy calls for rapid and widespread additional change, not just to IP laws and regulations, but also to the way Chinese companies think about IP. In this country infamous for IP infringement, it is vital for US businesses to understand how the rapidly changing IP landscape in China will play out.

Elliot Papageorgiou, a leading Global Intellectual Property Lawyer from Rouse’s Chinese offices, joins us to discuss IP enforcement and litigation for technology companies doing business in and with China. In this timely seminar, we will discuss the roles of the Chinese bureaucracy and judiciary and why understanding these relationships is crucial to rights owners doing business in China. We will also explore examples of how Chinese companies are responding to the new National IP Strategy and how the government aims to foster their progress ‘up the value chain’. The program will conclude with a panel discussion among Upstate New York companies, which will share their IP concerns and experiences from China and the strategies they are shaping to protect technology in this growing market.

Converting Technology to Cash

11/18/09 (W) 10:00am - 3:00pm

Lennox Technology Center Multimedia Room, 150 Lucius Gordon Drive, West Henrietta, NY 14584

Workshop Session for Accurate Sales Forecasting of Early-Stage Technology
& Using the USA National Innovation Marketplace

This workshop guides participants through a process to describe their product or early stage technology in terms that will be used to generate a 4-5 page sales forecast and innovation status report using Merwyn Business Simulation tools. Participants will also receive training in the use of the National Innovation Marketplace, an internet-based service for connecting products, services, and technologies with customers.

Over the past 10 years, Merwyn has been used to test over 20,000 innovations ranging from industrial products to consumer products and services. Merwyn Business Simulations are effective for forecasting future sales of products and services that are early in development where there is significant uncertainty.

The market price for a Merwyn Business Simulation is $2,000 and this fee will be waived for participants that complete this workshop. This event is part of the NIST National Innovation “Road Show” which enables us to make this special offer now. If you would like to review a sample Merwyn business simulation report, please contact Jackie Spiro at the address below.

The workshop will be lead by John Steele, HTR/MEP Growth Services Manager. John is one of the few NIST/Manufacturing Extension Partners in the country to be fully trained in both the use of Merwyn Business Simulation tools as well as the National Innovation Marketplace.

This workshop is open to all companies and individual inventors in the Rochester region that have an early-stage technology product or service that could benefit by having a proper sales forecast and deeper insight of its potential market value.

Pre-Seed Workshop

8/20, 21, 28/09 (TH, F, F)

Technology Garden, Syracuse

MedTech, together with the Syracuse Technology Garden, is hosting a Pre-Seed Workshop for budding entrepreneurs. The Pre-seed Workshop (PSW) is a systematic process to help scientists and researchers evaluate the commercialization potential of an invention. Through the PSW, participants receive essential input from the venture capital and business communities that will assist them with launching a start-up company. PSW is designed to take a raw idea from a university lab or company and investigate its marketplace viability using a preliminary commercialization plan that is developed during the workshop. PSW also includes activities to help researchers decide if the idea should move forward as a start-up company and tests the start-up fortitude of the researchers themselves. This workshop will include teams from Upstate Medical University, Syracuse University, SUNY College of Environmental Science & Forestry, and Sensis Corporation. Organizations interested in fielding teams or contributing business expertise for future workshops throughout Upstate New York are encouraged to contact Heather Erickson.

Round Table Discussion Series: Molecular Diagnostics

6/18/09 (TH) 10:00 - 2:30pm

Lennox Tech Center, Multi Media Room, Rochester

Molecular diagnostics can detect many types of diseases at the earliest stages and are expected to be among the highest growth opportunities within the larger field of In-Vitro Diagnostics. Clinical use of these tests promises to improve patient outcomes and lower healthcare costs.
