Rapid pathogen detection is critical for protecting public health and selecting effective treatment for infected patients. Conventional diagnostic tools have many limitations that can reduce sensitivity and delay timely diagnosis. Optical detection of viruses is challenging because many viruses range from 5 to 250 nanometers in length—shorter than visible wavelengths of light—and amplification, or culturing, is difficult to impossible for replicating viruses because they do not replicate outside of a host cell, and have either RNA or DNA, but not both.
The presenters for this session are working at the forefront of technology and healthcare issues related to the detection of viral pathogens, strategies for developing of new assays, and will discuss their work in this emerging field.
Presenters:
Dr. Benjamin Miller, Professor URMC
Dr. Miller’s research program combines elements of organic synthesis, computer-aided molecular design, combinatorial chemistry, and device science. His group is developing several novel nanotechnology-based optical platforms for the sensitive, multiplex detection of pathogens, and for the rapid detection and quantification of protein biomarkers. Miller is also a co-founder of Adarza BioSystems, a Rochester area life science tools manufacturer.
Dr. James Hengst, President & Chief Executive Officer, ZeptoMetrix Corporation
ZeptoMetrix is a global leader in the fight against infectious disease. The company develops a range of products for research and industrial partners, including retroviral kits, positive and negative samples, and PCR controls. They maintain two large BL3 labs and support their assay development services with an in-house clinical repository of more than 1.5 million specimens and an extensive network of additional samples.
Early-stage companies, diagnostics and medical device inventors, and medical researchers that are interested in the detection of viral pathogens or are considering developing new medical devices, pharmaceuticals, or biologics are encouraged to participate.
