Thermo Fisher- Mechanical Design Engineer, New Product Development

The Mechanical Design Engineer develops designs of new products from initial idea, to the approved design concept and successful implementation into manufacturing for Thermo Fisher Scientific. This includes activities related to generating product design solutions based on customer requirements in the life science/medical device, laboratory, packaging, diagnostic and bioprocess containers and consumer product markets.

Requirements include a strong background in product performance/application engineering, with involvement in the voice of customer (VOC) process to ascertain product requirements (application, performance, ergonomics, etc.), define specifications, benchmark criteria and determine manufacturability for new products, while also supporting the maintenance of existing product designs.  

The Mechanical Design Engineer reports to the Product Development Engineering Manager, and is responsible for developing and successfully implementing innovative new product designs for the global laboratory and specialty consumable markets.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
Concept Design and Development:  Responsible for applying product appropriate Design for Manufacturing (DFM) guidelines, creates complete 3D models and 2D drawings for new products of concepts from benchmarking, VOC, sketches, 2D designs, 3D models in CAD, verbal instructions, as well as reverse engineering of existing designs. Transmit designs to appropriate moldmakers, contract manufacturers, prototyping services, automation or other service suppliers by converting the 3D models and drawings to other formats as needed.

Detailed Design:  Responsible for mechanical designs that conform to original new product design intent with regards to satisfying form, fit and function; robustness, performance life, manufacturability, safety, quality and cost optimization.  Applies stress analysis, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, analytical tools, sound plastic part design practices, , reviewing alternate material options, etc.  Responsible for final designs accurately reflecting the molded product, maintaining accurate electronic design files, including design changes for the life of the product.  

Verification and Validation:  Accountable for FAT, IQ, OQ involvement to ensure design verification and validation, including measurement and dimensional studies, performing tolerance analysis, generating quality inspection criteria, etc.  Assist in maintaining intellectual property rights and information. Assist with patent related activities and interfacing with corporate legal.

Communication:  Communicates with Marketing, New Product Development, Industrial Design and other team members to resolve design details that differ from concepts or new product specifications.  Coordinates and presents design review meetings.  

Special Projects: Resource for technical projects that require functionality and DFM.  Work on special assignments and other projects as assigned by Manager that are deemed critically important for the business unit.

QUALIFICATIONS

B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering, with 8-10 years experience in plastic product design, performance and applications engineering.
Strong proficiency in 3D CADD, SolidWorks preferred.
Demonstrated performance in the design of new products from concept through release to manufacture.
Experience with MoldFlow and other mold design and plastic design analysis design tools.
Experience in injection and blow molding of life science/medical devices and laboratory products desired.
Work experience under Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), ISO standards and familiarization of FDA regulations desired.
Excellent technical skills including demonstrated project management, organization and planning.
